Research & Planning - Elias

My group and I have been tasked to create a news package, so during this period I thought it would be good to reflect on what I did last year regarding research and planning.

At the beginning of last year I had no experience in using softwares such as adobe premier element, aftereffects etc, however now after using youtube tutorials, and asking my teachers. I am fairly confident in my ability to use these softwares. I believe that this shows a good amount progress that I've made from the beginning of year 12 to the start of year 13.

Last year I was assigned to make the music, edit the thriller, I wanted to compose music with the influence of other thriller movies music in mind. The only problem being that I was not very confident in my capability to edit and enhance certain sounds to add suspense/effects etc. I wasn't sure how i could go about doing this so I went to do some research on youtube and found a piece of music that was made for a thriller movie, I analysed the piece and extracted what I could possibly use in my opening sequence. The piece displayed a lot of things. for example a wide variety of dynamics, though I wasn't sure to incorporate it into my piece then, I also learned through watching a Youtube video on how to create this effect (crescendo & diminuendo) on garageband.

Whilst watching our groups first opening sequence draft, we found that we lacked sound effects, the only sound in the clip being our non-diegetic sound music which I composed on garageband. As I was in control of the music and sound I decided to do research on different sound effects that I could encrypt in the video. I found very useful and interesting sounds on youtube, However i was stuck between the idea of having sound effects that were a bit out there, meaning abstract. Or keeping is basic with some amplified generic sounds. I decided to go with the amplified generic sounds as it made sense in comparison with what was seen on screen. Some sound effects being, farm noises, chicken cluck, knife sharpening, heart beat, oil sizzling, fire spitting etc. Which i downloaded, I embedded these sound clips to the video and it helped My group and I get a higher mark.

Before creating our opening sequence my group were giving a preliminary task which assigned us to recording some footage and edit it. The recording of footage was very simple, Thankfully I made sure our group didn't lack different shot angles, However the quality of our footage was quite bad. So we had this in mind when we were recording our opening sequence and made some adjustment via editing. unfortunately no one had a professional camera with HD quality, so we also did our research on different ways we could use the camera we have to truly capture the shot. For example our shot reverse shot, high angle, low angle, mid shot etc. and tried to use as many as possible in the appropriate place and our editing skills had improved significantly through various tasks that had led up to the making of the prelim such as a the remake of Napoleon Dynamite and our music video.
